When choosing a waterproof jacket, the first thing you need to decide is what features matter to you. Do you need a lightweight waterproof jacket for hiking in warm weather, or would you prefer a heavier jacket with better weather protection for outdoor activities in the winter? You also need to think about how intense your activity is, and how breathable your jacket needs to be. And does it need to be extra-durable?

WATERPROOF PUFFER JACKET

If you're looking for a waterproof puffer jacket for hiking in the colder months, the name to look for is GORE-TEX®, which is the most well-known waterproof membrane thanks to its durability and breathability. But of course it isn't the only option out there.

Most waterproof jackets use a 2-layer, 2.5-layer or 3-layer construction, which all have a durable water repellent (DWR) coated outer fabric to protect the rest of the jacket against moisture. The second layer is the membrane which gives the jacket its water repellent and breathable properties. And the final layer of 3-layer jackets is a thick PU layer which makes it super-durable, though not as breathable or lightweight as 2.5-layer jackets. So what jacket you choose does depend on the weather conditions and your activity.
