The Best Trail Running Gear

Since you’ll be running, working up a sweat and getting active-  it’s important to remember that you should always try to keep things light, both in your clothing, equipment and any other gear or accessories you may want to carry; with that in mind; let's get into all the essentials you’ll need to have a comfortable, enjoyable and safe trail running experience.

Trail Running Kit List

One of the most important things when it comes to almost any sport is making sure you’re kitted out with the right clothes and equipment. So make sure you check the weather and understand the nature of your chosen trail and what those conditions may require from you; whether you’re planning a warm and sunny trail or a crisp and refreshing one, you always need to stay prepared for the unexpected, so whether that means you need to pack a light raincoat for your sunny run or a hat and running sunglasses for your cold runs, it’s always best to be prepared.

Trail Running Shoes

The first and most important piece of equipment you’ll need for trail running is a good pair of shoes.
If you’ve ever tried to go on a long trail run with normal everyday shoes, you’ll know the importance of a good pair of trail shoes, and if you’re yet to make that mistake, count yourself lucky and take this a pre-warning.

Trail running shoes have better traction and durability than regular running shoes, and they are designed to handle the uneven terrain of trails. Look for shoes with good grip, support, and cushioning to protect your feet and prevent injuries.

Sun Protection

Trail running can take you through exposed areas and unexpected weather conditions- whether that’s the UV rays from the sun on a hot day or a bright winter's day, you'll need sun protection.

Depending on what the weather calls for, you may need to wear a hat, a pair of sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect your skin and eyes from the sun's harmful rays.

Essential Trail Running Equipment

Once you’ve sorted out your kit, it’s time to think about what you need to take with you whilst you’re out on your trail, things to keep you from getting lost, dehydrated or low energy. How much you pack will depend on how long you plan on being outside, but again, it’s important to take into account unexpected circumstances like packing enough water for your trail and, in the unfortunate event that you find yourself lost, same with navigation tools, you can take a GPS but it’s probably wise to pack a good-old map just in case you run out of battery.

Navigation Tools

Trails can be confusing especially if you’re trying out a new route or not yet fully familiar with your trail, so it's important to have some form of navigation tool with you to help you stay on route, on track and avoid getting lost. This could be a GPS watch, a paper map, or a smartphone app that tracks your location.

Whatever tool you choose, make sure you are familiar with how to use it before heading out on the trail.
If you’re carrying an electronic navigation tool or relying on your phone, you may need a power bank or spare batteries.
