Two people rowing a kayak

How to choose your kayak

You can choose an inflatable or rigid kayak according to various criteria - find out just what those are by reading our guide below.

The Decathlon kayak and stand up paddle brand shares useful tips for your time on the water.

1. Depending on the number of seats

You can go kayaking alone or with others – make it a group trip or a family affair! We sell models with space for up to four people (2 adults + 2 children).

And remember, for safe kayaking, always put on your buoyancy vest.

2. Depending on your use

Occasional Trips

If you go on occasional and short trips (from 1 hour to 1/2 day and at most 300m from land) and in calm weather, you’ll want comfort and stability, so choose a wide and flat kayak model.

Regular Trips

If you go on long trips (from 1/2 day to 1 day and from 300m to 2 nautical miles from land), you need good glide quality. Choose a long and tapered kayak model.

Fishing Trips

If you go on fishing trips in lakes, calm rivers or on the sea (at most 300m from land), you’ll need comfort, stability and storage capacity.

3. Depending on its compactness

There are two types of kayaks; rigid and inflatable. The advantage of an inflatable kayak is that when deflated, it fits in a backpack and can therefore be transported in a car boot. A rigid kayak will be more robust and more stable but more space-consuming, so you will need a set of roof bars to transport it.

Important: For safe kayaking, don’t forget to put on your buoyancy vest.
