for EveryBODY

"My first experience of yoga was at school, one of my teachers was a yogi and she'd host daily practice at 6.30am. I think I went once or twice, but 6.30am is a bit early for a teenager and I didn't keep it up! However, it did have an influence and in my 20s I found myself drawn back to yoga as I became more serious about running and needed something in my life that would balance out all the stress I was putting on my body. Over the years yoga has been become about more than stretching out my runner's body, it's an opportunity to carve some space in a hectic world where I can just be and clear my mind.

I think a lot of people have this idea that yoga is all about the shapes you make and that it's only for super fit flexible people, but yoga really is for every body. Yoga is about connecting your body and your mind and giving your self whatever you need on that day.

Yoga can be headstands, but it can also be sitting peacefully. It's so hard to explain the power of yoga to someone who hasn't experienced it, so go and give it a go. Try a restorative class or Hatha for a kind introduction, pull on some comfies from Decathlon! and go with an open mind, you will find something you need in yoga."

" I'm an international yoga teacher, specialising in a strong dynamic and fun flow. I teach workshops and festivals around the world, using London as my base. When in London I teach my classes exclusively at Psycle where I lead the team as the Head Of Yoga, or you can find my classes online through the Fiit app.

I first came to yoga to rehabilitate some injuries I had suffered through years of playing rugby. Initially it was a purely physical practice for me but very quickly it started to have a huge impact on my mindset and real world application off the mat, that's when I decided that I needed to share the practice with others.

Let go of any expectations or stories you might have told yourself about the practice. You don't need to be strong to get started, you don't need to be flexible to get started, you don't need to be able to do all of the things to get started, you just need to get started!

Everyone is different, so it's impossible to compare yourself to anyone else, just hop on the mat, do your best, and use it as an opportunity to leave feeling better than when you started!"

"I came across yoga at the age of 21 while backpacking around the world after university. At first, my approach to yoga was simply to treat it as another form of exercise, and I loved it because it was completely different to any type of workout I’d done before. However, I quickly discovered that yoga was much more than exercise. I was intrigued by the idea of syncing my mind, body and breath, allowing my breath to guide me through the asanas and bringing my awareness into the present. I quickly learnt how incredible yoga made me feel and I made a routine out of it.

Yoga helps to bring a lot of balance into my life, it’s the yin to the yang of everyday life. Whenever I feel stressed out, yoga is the perfect antidote, and I love coming home at the end of the day to my yoga mat. At home, I often end of doing a lot of yin and restorative yoga, I really enjoy extended stretches and find them very soothing.

Everyone can do yoga if they want and having a positive attitude will make all the difference.
I also believe that every yoga teacher is unique, and finding a teacher who you can connect and feel comfortable with is important.

"I am a yoga teacher and an ex athlete living in London. I've been always connected with movement as well as inner exploration. My yoga journey started a few years back. It started as a way of releasing tension in my mind and eventually it became my way of life.

My advice for people it is to just give it a try. When we see on the surface of things we create false expectations and judgements.

By removing those from the equation, we are able to really connect with what we are doing.

Being yoga or not, we can really grow when we allow new things to come to our lives."

"I'm a 39 year old mum of two and I've been practicing yoga for 20 years. After the birth of my second child, I was feeling a bit lost. A bit disconnected to myself. It was at this time that I began to cultivate a daily home practice. I began to discover the joy of combining movement and breath and the immensely positive impact this had on my mind and body. Time poor and with limited finances, I simply rolled out my mat and spent time moving and breathing.

Yoga will help you create a deeper awareness of the body. Coming back to your body draws your mind back to the present.

Suddenly there are no "shoulds" or "musts" even if only temporarily, there is only the reality of the present. Yoga is giving yourself the gift of presence and awareness. In yoga there is nothing you need to achieve, there is no final form your movements have to take. Your effort is the only goal. Your effort is enough. Yoga teaches us that we need not be attached to a particular goal or posture.

Your only job is to feel and to be present with each breath. Through a regular practice you will build strength and stability in both the body and the mind, you will learn to quiet down the chatter in your mind and focus on nourishing your body through the breath."

"I’m in my 40s- and a psychotherapist, researcher, writer and yoga teacher. I’ve been practicing yoga since I was in my 20s. I started doing yoga to help me to sleep better and feel calmer because even though I was young when I began, I was really unwell: sleepless, anxious and asthmatic. Yoga has acted like a spine holding together my process of growing up healthier, happier and more awake.

I’d always had an interest in the spiritual aspects: body, mind, soul and spirit coming together sounded good to me. Exercise alone lacked a spiritual aspect and felt just like performance or acheiving a body standard… and spirituality on its own felt like it left my body and everyday life behind.

Over the years the stretching and breathing aspects of yoga have given me a toolkit for decreasing my anxieties, keeping my body supple and healthy, and managing a very full life with a lot more resilience- and a lot less fear.

When practicing yoga, it’s helpful to adopt a mindset of ‘this is all a bonus’ rather than trying to ‘get it right’ or be good at it. See each movement as a gift- as more than you’d be doing otherwise- and celebrate what your body can do rather than what it can’t. I’ve taught yoga to people as old as 93 who haven’t been able to move much, but even learning to breathe differently opens doors to feeling better and more alive."

" I am a Yogi and Intuitive Wellbeing Coach and I became ‘a body confidence advocate’ after suffering with Bells Palsy and experiencing healing through yoga and wellbeing. My illness allowed to be see and appreciate what an amazing vessel my body is. Having a visible disability allowed me to see that I was so much more that just how my body looked. I was able to overcome this experience through the transformation benefits of yoga and wellbeing, becoming stronger both mentally and physically.

I am passionately about helping people from groups not normally represented in the main stream media to experience yoga, so that yoga becomes more accessible, inclusive and diverse. Helping to create community and connection on and off the mat.

EveryBODY is a yoga body and it is time that this message is shouted from the roof tops. Our differences should be celebrated, the world would be a boring place if we were all the same. Body positivity in yoga is allowing everyBODY to get on the mat."

"Being brought up in an Indian household, yoga philosophy has always been close to my heart. As someone who never did dance, ballet or gymnastics, I was never ‘naturally flexible’ and felt a bit intimidated going to classes. I had a vigorous gym routine, focused on what my body was looking like instead of how I truly felt. My regime soon became excessive, I was exhausted and suffering from anxiety.

I learnt how to slow down by focusing on my breath and started noticing the quality of my thoughts. I have learnt that all yoga asks of us if that we come as we are and celebrate ourselves for everything our bodies CAN do. Yoga has taught me that I am good enough, that we are all good enough exactly the way that we are. I believe we are all beautifully unique in our own ways and yoga has taught me to truly embrace that.

One pose may be hard, the other may be easier - it’s different for everyone and a personal practice. We call it a journey because there’s no end goal We learn something new each time. Yoga helps to establish a loving, companionate relationship with the body.

Your flexibility, measurements, race, weight or gender are of no importance. Yoga will pick you up exactly where you are and will accept exactly who you are. "

"As a child burn survivor who suffered years of self-body hating and never being able to achieve anything, swimming was my only form of exercise and happiness. I have always been a strong swimmer and it definitely helped me with my tight scars but recently was introduced to yoga. Each morning I need to stretch my scars due to their tightness and realised that yoga was a great way to start my day.

Over the years, severe depression took its toll on me but I soon realised that mindfulness was important for me to change my mindset from negative to positive and yoga seemed to help. There are all types of yoga activities including armchair yoga which I recently discovered. I am quite a curvy lady with large hips and tummy due to my tight scars and love of sweet foods but yoga no longer scares me and I am becoming more comfortable each day.

I’m disabled, middle aged and plus sized suffering years with my mental health and now enjoying yoga meeting some lovely people who are all supportive of my journey. Don’t be afraid as yoga is for Every Body and not just one body type or ability.
