Bear in mind, however, that natural insulators lose their effectiveness in contact with water. Do you ski intensively or are mountain temperatures rising? Look for a breathable down jacket that efficiently wicks away perspiration. For greater breathability, a sleeveless down jacket is your best bet. Down jackets are generally water-repellent, but they don't provide total protection from the elements. For total protection against rain and snow, complete your outfit with a waterproof ski jacket. How to wash your winter down jacket?

Tumble-drying is essential for all feather skiwear. For your warm down jacket, hand washing is preferable. For synthetic jackets, machine wash at 30°C. Dry your down jacket immediately in the tumble-dryer. Add 3 to 4 tennis balls to the drum to prevent the feathers from sticking together. Repeat the drying program until your down jacket regains its plumpness.
