WHAT MAKES THE BEST WALKING SOCKS?

The best walking socks should be lightweight and breathable so your feet stay cool on a hot day, and most importantly, keep your feet blister-free. Walking socks offer far more protection than you would otherwise get from your average socks, but it's always handy to carry some blister plasters in your hiking backpack, just in case. Another option is double-layer socks. The two layers of material reduce friction to prevent blisters from forming.

Walking socks should also provide warmth if needed, so the sock material is an important factor to consider. For example, wool is commonly found in thermal walking socks because it insulates well. And merino wool, which is extra fine, is particularly good because it manages moisture and sweat so well. Synthetic materials are also common, and are typically more durable than wool. Cotton can often retain heat and do not handle moisture well, and damp socks from rain or sweat can cause chafing, which can lead to blisters.

The length of your walking socks should also be a consideration. To fit well, the sock should finish a little higher than your walking boot or shoe. This will minimise the chance of the footwear rubbing and keep the sock from slipping down.
