Functions of a third layer

The third layer is the layer that protects you from the elements, such as the cold and the wind, while retaining the warmth and breathability provided by the inner layers. By wearing a suitable cycling jacket, you will maintain your performance and comfort, whatever the weather.
This 300 cycling jacket, with storm cuffs and a membrane, offers great protection from the cold during 1-hour rides.

Warmth

A product's ability to protect from the cold. This ability depends on the thermal resistance and the air resistance of the fabric. The higher its thermal resistance, the more the product retains the heat produced by the body while cycling.

Breathability

To determine whether a fabric is breathable, we measure its evaporative resistance (test based on standard ISO 11092).
The lower its resistance, the more the fabric will let water vapour produced by the body escape, and therefore the more breathable it is.
For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
