Choosing the right surfboard wax is very important. If you use a wax that is too soft for the climate then your feet will move around. Or a wax that's too hard will not give enough grip. Surfboard wax is optimised for different climates and water temperatures, so try out different types of wax to see what suits you. Wetsuit boots will also help give a better grip on the surfboard.

DECATHLON SURF WAX

We stock a range of surboard wax designed by Olaian, the Decathlon brand dedicated to surfing, bodyboarding, and skimboarding. We have board wax suitable for cool waters from 10-17°C , moderate temperatures between 18-25°C, and warm waters of 25°C or more. Suitable for both surfing and bodyboarding, our surfboard wax will stop you from slipping while on your board and it has been tested and approved by our teams of partner and employee surfers. And did we mention they smell great too?

We also have a range of board wax from GreenFix. An alternative to paraffin, it's 100% ecological and natural, environmentally-friendly and made from renewable ingredients.

SURFBOARD WAXING

Before you use your surfboard, you'll first need to wax it. You need to start with a clean board to ensure a more even wax coat that will stay on for longer, so remove any old wax if there's any on there. Then we suggest giving your board a quick layer of base coat which is generally hard and will form small beads for the top layer to stick to. And when it comes to applying your top coat, there's no correct technique as such, but you should always apply it gently. Pressing too hard is going to cause the wax to smear, so you want to rub the wax up and down the deck softly enough so that it starts to form little beads. This will offer better traction and grip when you’re on the board. And to add a little more traction, you can apply some extra sticky wax to where you place your feet. It only takes a couple of rubs to make a difference, so use sparingly.
