We've all been there, wearing a new pair of sandals or running shoes for the first time only to be struck down by blisters. The options? Hunt around your bag for several plasters to stick on the wound and watch as they peel off one-by-one within a few minutes, leaving you to hobble home in agony.

So how do we stop blisters from forming in the first place? And how's best to treat them?

WHAT CAUSES BLISTERS?

Blisters can be extremely painful, and they can put an abrupt end to your hike. And there are several factors that make blisters more likely to happen: Pressure, friction, and moisture.

A tight spot in your boot or a wrinkle in your sock can create a friction pressure point, so it's important to wear hiking boots that fit you properly. And watch out for any areas that rub. Also, the sweatier your skin the softer it is, which makes it more susceptible to blistering.

HEEL BLISTER PROTECTION

Prevention is always better than cure, so there are some things you can do to help stop blisters from forming in the first place. Firstly, you should make sure your hiking boots fit and are broken in properly before your hike.

Secondly, you need to wear proper socks. When hiking, you should always try to avoid cotton as it retains moisture. Go with synthetic or wool instead and make sure they fit properly. And for extra protection, wearing lining socks adds a protective layer between your skin and your hiking socks, and they can help wick away moisture. It's also handy to carry a fresh pair of walking socks so you can change into them if your feet get wet.

BLISTER PLASTERS

If you do start to get blisters while hiking it's best to treat them as soon as you can. Blister bandages with pads and gels add a protective layer to prevent a blister from getting worse. Pads provide cushioning, and gels soothe the area by cooling it off. And most importantly, keep the area clean to avoid infection.
