WOFH (Working out from Home)
WOFH (Working out from Home)
When it comes to those looking to maintain an active lifestyle, there wasn’t a group more impacted by COVID than the gym-goer. In the first lockdown on 20th March, the closure of a place that many across the country saw as a fitness sanctuary that they pay a sizable monthly fee to gain access too, left a void. How was this filled? By bringing the workout home.
Across the UK, especially in Wales and Scotland, the two countries with the tightest restrictions early on, finding new ways to work out from home took centre stage in people’s active pursuits. When compared to the previous non-pandemic year of 2019, Wales’ searches for ‘home workouts’, ‘home exercises’, and ‘bodyweight exercises’ increased by 254%, while in Scotland, the same search results were also up by 242%.
These high results weren’t just in Scotland and Wales. Across English towns and cities, people have gone online to find out the best ways of bringing their workouts home. The top of these searchers was Blackpool, up by 500%, followed by Crawley with 450%, then Stockport at 425%, and both Warrington and Oldham at 366%, but to name a few.
Shows what people can really do with their time indoors.
The Rise of the Home Gym
The Rise of the Home Gym
Previous to Covid-19, the concept of the home gyms were usually for those with large amounts of space and the commitment to fitness which means getting your money’s worth from the equipment. Since the pandemic started, this is no longer the case. For many, working out at home has become part of their new normal. This is in part due to video workouts becoming more commonplace but is also down to people across the country using the money saved from the gym membership and creating their own gyms at home.
A great example of this is the massive spike in fitness equipment we saw during the first lockdown in May, as shown in the figures below.

Along with the closure of gyms, the lockdown also saw Yoga studios shutting for the foreseeable. This was another example of early concerns about how a growing industry would survive in the midst of a pandemic. However, whether it’s due to the stresses of spending the majority of our time indoors and or just down to the long-standing popularity of the practice, online Yoga has gone from strength to strength across the UK.
It was Wales once again that came out on top with their pursuit to stay active, with their search for ‘yoga workouts’, ‘easy yoga’ and ‘beginners yoga’ received a 140% boost compared to the previous year.
Across the rest of the UK, the following were the top 10 in looking to become places of mediation and calm throughout the lockdown.

Going that Extra Mile
While it’s long been known the importance of getting a 10k daily step count in, the responsibilities of daily life have in the past made this harder than it should be.
With commuting, the amount of time spent at a desk or on worksites, not to mention daily admin once your day is done, who had time to check how many steps they’d taken? With lockdown, however, a chance to get outside became both essential and a highlight of the day.
In England, where the lockdown restrictions were looser than their Scottish and Welsh neighbours, people made the very most of their local surroundings. Searches for ‘walks near me’ and ‘walking routes’ during March-Nov 2020 were up 205% over the previous year, compared to Scotland and Wales, which were 174% and 84% respectively.
Across English towns and cities, there was a rambling growth in suburban areas such as Stockport and Watford which both saw a 358% boost, as well as Ipswich with 352% although the biggest rise came from St Albans with a massive 514% rise.
Here are the other English towns and cities that saw a noticeable boost in walking this year.

From the Couch to 5K (and other running goals)
On April 6th, 2020, within days of his 100th birthday, Captain Tom Moore began walking in his garden. The aim was to complete one hundred laps of his 25m garden, by the 20th of April, with aid of his walking frame. Not only did his efforts help raise almost 32 million pounds for NHS together, a charity that supports staff, volunteers, and patients of the National Health Service, it also inspired the nation to do fundraising of their own.
One of these forms of fundraising was ‘Run for Heroes’ which used the Couch to 5K challenge, with runners completing a 5K, posting their route on social media, donating 5 pounds, before paying it forward to a friend or family member to get involved. The fundraising amount is currently just over 5 and half-million pounds, and along with the other charitable project that has grown up around the pandemic, is a great example of how our country pulls together in a time of crisis.
All this in turn, as well as people around the country getting back into the activity due to the closure of gyms, meant that many more people were on the lookout for new jogging gear. Across the UK, running shoe searches were up 196% in April, 174% in May, and 132% in June.
Making the Most of the Daily Cycle
Making the Most of the Daily Cycle
An activity that has already boomed in popularity over the last decade or so, and restrictions to travel, the pandemic has seen another surge for cycling.
With less traffic on the roads, and government guidance to avoid public transport, many more people hopped on their bikes and went out for a ride. This is shown in the research by Active Lives Children and Young People Survey, which reported an 18% increase in kids under 16 cycling during May - July 2020 and that was reflected with searches for bikes increasing by 263% in April and 421% in May making it the most popular month to search for a new bike during the last 5 years.
With restrictions continuing on for the foreseeable future, it’s likely this trend is going to continue even further.
Starting Anew
Lockdowns and restrictions have stopped us from doing many things we before took for granted. From little things such as hugging loved ones to going to live gigs and planning holidays, we have had to accept that our daily realities have changed.
However, it’s also meant an interest in activities we wouldn’t have previously considered. Here are some of the new hobbies the UK has picked up during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Basketball
Basketball
A non sporting boom that took place during the early stages of the UK lockdown (and indeed globally) was the streaming figures of Netflix. Of their program roster, one of the standouts was The Last Dance, the documentary that followed Michael Jordan in his final season at the Chicago Bulls.
This, along with it becoming one of the first sports that were allowed to resume, along with Tennis and Golf, meant popularity in Basketball shot up. This was shown with Searches for basketball hoops growing 768% in April and 604% in May because of it.
Golf
Golf
Lockdown and restrictions meant that golf is another activity that was initially severely affected by the pandemic. The closure of courses meant there were very few places to play or practice, meaning there weren't many on the lookout for new golfing equipment. This changed however when Golf became one of the first amateur sports to be allowed to resume. In turn, this meant there was a huge upturn in people across the UK searching for golf gear, both new and regular players. From June, searches for golf clubs, balls, and equipment increased by 165% and remained high throughout 2020.
Camping
Camping
When we look back at 2020, will we see it as the year of the Staycation?
With overseas travel being thoroughly discouraged, and often meaning a two-week quarantine from certain countries upon their return, people across the UK looked for an outdoor alternative. During the spring months of March and April, restrictions meant that campsites took a real hit in terms of visitors.
Although lockdown ending and summer arriving saw campsites become busier, this was not reflected in the purchasing of new tents. Through each of the summer months, there was only an increase of 30% in searches for new tents, suggesting that any proof of a newfound national love of camping will be revealed in 2021.
