What bike to choose for commuting?

Want to commute by bike but not sure which one to choose? We're here to help.

Which type of bike is best for commuting?
Do you ride regularly, or are you new to cycling? Have you chosen to commute by bike? Then there's one key question you need to know the answer to: which bike should you buy for bike commuting? Read our article for answers to your questions and support in choosing your bike.

What's the right bike for commuting?

If the distance between your home and your workplace is 10 km or more, or if your route has hills on it, a long-distance city bike is just what you need.
These bikes offer excellent performance, which makes your journey easier, while maintaining a comfortable pedalling position for rides lasting between 20 minutes and an hour, i.e. longer than for popping to the shops.

So what is performance?

We explain all! it's a combination of several things:

- A lighter bike. Our non-assisted bikes (non-electric) all weigh around 14 kg, which is very light for a fully equipped city bike.
The stiff frame stops it warping and transforms the cyclist's energy into speed.
- The 60° riding position is a good compromise between sitting upright and being in a sporty position that wouldn't be comfortable for long. It means you can pedal efficiently throughout your commute.
- The bike's drivetrain means you can always find the right gear ratio whether you're on flat roads or cycling up steep climbs. The single chainring at the front makes it incredibly easy to find the right gear using the single “trigger”.
- The tyre design and optimised tyre weight make the bike really fast without losing grip, even on damp ground.

Performance is also important on an electrical assistance bike (e-bike) because an efficient bike will use less motor power and therefore considerably extend the battery's range.

So will it be a classic bike or an e-bike?

Tempted to give bike commuting a go?

Obviously, a non-assisted bike (non-electric) is much more affordable, and requires more physical effort. So if bike commuting is your sport of choice, it's a good choice.
On the other hand, if your commute is quite long or involves a lot of hills, your bike's assistance will get you to work without having worked up a sweat and, depending on your chosen assistance mode, without being too tired.
But regardless of whether your bike has electrical assistance, it's still a much more virtuous physical activity than other “passive” means of transport.

Which is the right long-distance bike?

If you're leaning towards a non-assisted bike, we've got two suggestions:
