1. Surfing England Accredited Surf School

If you have never tried surfing before we advise you have a lesson to learn the basics so you can have as much fun as possible!

Surf schools will have equipment that you can hire and well qualified instructors to help you before, during and after you have a go at the sport. We recommend taking a surf lesson with one of Surfing England’s accredited surf schools. These schools are recognized to practice and promote what the national governing body sees as “Best Practice”.

Take a look at the Surfing England map to find where these schools are located:

2. Lifeguards

Being in the sea is part of what makes surfing so enjoyable.
However, even the strongest swimmers can get into danger in the sea when there are hazards around. It is important if you are visiting a beach this summer to head somewhere with an operating lifeguard service. Lifeguards can advise on the best places to surf and inform you of what and where poses danger in the area.

Follow this map of where to find a lifeguarded beach in England and check out Surfing England's website for more safety tips.

3. Waves

To surf, you need waves! Unfortunately, not every beach has waves so pick a beach where waves are more commonly found. In general beaches in the South West of the country get waves heading in from the Atlantic Ocean. The coast along the North East of England also gets waves generated from the North Sea. Surfing popularity is also growing in the counties of Dorset, Isle of Wight, and Kent.

Waves depend on several factors, swell size, wind direction and tides. Surf forecasting websites can help you guess where and what type of waves you are likely to find at your chosen spot. Surfline is great for covering what the surf is doing all around the world! However, forecasts can be difficult to understand, so try phoning the surf school you are heading to in advance to get a better forecast picture!

4. Facilities

After surfing and being in the sea, you are likely to have a big smile on your face but also feel a bit tired! Make sure you choose a beach with your chosen facilities in close proximity for when you leave the water. Toilets, public showers and changing facilities can be useful to wash away the sea and have space to get that sand off before heading home. Think about available parking spaces, or public transport options from your chosen surf spot. Cafés and supermarkets are also worth considering – surfing can make you particularly hungry! Local council websites can often be informative when choosing a beach location based on its facilities.
