How to Choose Your Treadmill

What are you looking for in a treadmill? Our experts can help you pick the best one for your exercise routine.

Decathlon's fitness brand offers helpful tips for your workouts.

Let your personal fitness goals determine which treadmill you buy i.e. whether you’re looking to get or stay in shape, lose weight or enhance your performance, perhaps before a big race. Then, consider things like speed, horsepower and incline as well as comfort and extra features like coaching to take your training up a notch.

1. Performance

The first criteria to consider when choosing a treadmill is the maximum speed. Your needs will vary depending on whether you plan to walk at 6 km/h or run faster than 14km/h (i.e., stay in shape versus improve your performance). We suggest choosing a model with a faster maximum speed than your average speed so there’s room for improvement and a challenging goal to spur you on. Want to change up your routine or lose a few extra pounds? The incline function will make running a bit trickier and help you burn more calories.

2. Comfort

Your treadmill should be suitable for your size and stride. The faster you go and the longer your stride, the wider and longer the deck will need to be. Also remember to try out different cushioning systems to find the level of comfort you need.

3. Coaching

Different treadmills offer different features. Training programmes (weight loss, performance development, etc.) will help you change up your workouts. To track your progress and check your heart rate in real-time, you can choose between two types of heart rate monitors: the hand pulse grip system, or the more accurate chest strap system. Know that compatible apps for certain treadmills can give you a customised workout depending on your physical ability and goals. It’s just like having a real coach at home!

Before starting any exercise programme, you should consult your doctor. This is particularly important if you are over 35 or have experienced health problems before or if you have not exercised for several years. One last thing: don't forget to wear suitable shoes with good cushioning when walking or running on the treadmill, and remember to stay hydrated during your workout.
