The decision to go for a grip or overgrip mainly depends on the feel and sensation you're looking for when holding the racket. Of course, your skill level will also play a role.

1. Choosing a grip or an overgrip

The selection of a grip or overgrip will be based on how comfortable you feel when you pick up your racket, as well as various technical benefits. A grip is made of bandage-like material covering the base of your handle, which you should replace at least once or twice a year. An overgrip magnifies the characteristics of the base grip and, as the name suggests, goes over the base grip. A grip and overgrip are almost identical in characteristics and offer a variety of benefits.

Grip or overgrip?

Whether it's grip or overgrip, it all depends on your comfort when you pick up your racket.

Grip Comfort

Grips that are referred to as 'smooth' provide comfort and durability. These grips are soft and absorbent.

The Grip of a Grip

'Dotted' grips are fine and easily identifiable due to their identifying marking 'dots'. They’re ideal if you are looking for a grip that offers great sensation and durability.

2. The thickness of the handle

When purchasing a tennis racket, one of the characteristics you must consider is the handle's thickness. Grips and overgrips are available to stay flexible with the handle's thickness. If you fall between two sizes, go for the smaller size and add an overgrip to achieve the perfect consistency: the overgrip will serve you well, adding around 1.5mm in thickness.
