Top Tips for Choosing the Best SUP Board

When choosing a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), it's important to consider the size, shape, and weight capacity of the board to match your needs.

Board Size
For beginners, stability is key. Generally, a longer and wider board offers better balance:

  • Length: A board between 10 to 12 feet is ideal for most adults. Longer boards offer more stability and a smoother glide, while shorter boards are easier to manoeuvre.
  • Width: Look for a board that's 30 to 34 inches wide. Wider boards provide greater balance, making them perfect for beginners.
Board Shape
SUP boards typically come in two shapes: all-around and touring.
  • All-around boards are ideal for beginners. They are versatile, stable, and suited for various water conditions.
  • Touring boards are longer and built for speed and long-distance paddling. However, they require better balance and are recommended for those with more experience.
Weight Capacity
Every paddleboard has a maximum weight limit. Be sure to choose a board that can support your weight along with any gear you’ll be carrying. A board with a higher weight capacity generally provides more stability, which is especially helpful for beginners.

We'll explore these features in more detail below.

Choosing an SUP Board According to your Height and Weight

  • How to Choose Your Stand-Up Paddle Board

Choosing an SUP Board by Height

When determining what size SUP is right for you, a general rule of thumb is to add 9-10 inches to the paddler’s height. Alongside this, remember to factor in the padder's weight, how many times they’ve paddled, and the location of where you'll be paddling. This will vary depending on the primary use of the SUP, with more experienced paddlers choosing this method to find their perfect fit.

  • How to Choose Your Stand-Up Paddle Board

Choosing an SUP Board by Weight

If you are a SUP beginner, you’ll want a board that supports your weight and can help you balance easily. It’s important to remember that if you’re planning on taking a significant other (including your dog), you will need to factor in the extra weight. This also applies to any food, water or gear you bring.

If you weigh less than 150lb, you’ll want to go for a shorter paddleboard in the 9’6 range, and if you get the right design, these boards can give the rider a lot of stability. Make sure the width is appropriate for the length at around 30-32 inches, as anything wider will be slow to paddle.

Choosing an SUP Board for Beginners

As a beginner, your primary focus should be to enjoy yourself and gain an understanding of what a paddling board can bring you and what it has to offer. Finding the calmest waters possible is best, as they will provide the easiest conditions for you to learn in. Aim for lakes, ponds and marshes — places with small waves under 50cm. By starting in such areas, you will be able to get used to the requirements of stand-up paddleboarding.

When choosing a SUP for a beginner, it’s a good idea to look for a long, wide board with a curved nose. Stability is critical for first-timers. Although it’ll be something that you can improve and develop to gain any enjoyment during the early stages, you will want the board to do some of the heavy lifting for you. But remember, safety is key for beginners, so a board with a leash can go a long way in ensuring you keep your head above water.

Choosing Intermediate SUP Boards

Once you feel more confident about your SUP skillset, it may be time to start looking for a new board. An intermediate-level paddleboard will provide increased performance for both speed and agility. The board will offer the paddler a better platform to practise new skills, such as pivoting and reverse paddle turns. The more competent you become, the more the paddle-boarding world will open itself up. Let’s look at the different styles of intermediate paddle boarding.

Intermediate Stand-up Paddleboards for Touring

If you’re unsure exactly what type of paddle boarding you want to get involved with, an all-around intermediate board will work with various conditions. For instance, the improved agility and speed will help riders navigate a line-up far more easily when catching waves and manoeuvre more challenging rivers.

By now, you’ve been out touring for more than two hours a day and can travel long distances. It’s time to find a board with higher glide capabilities. Streamlined, longer, and more lightweight boards set themselves apart from the beginner board. It’s also a good idea to bring a leash, as you would with the beginner board (and for all safe SUP boarding).

Intermediate Stand-up Paddleboards for Racing

Ready to take things up a notch? Known in some circles as SUPXROSS, SUP racing is usually done on a long stretch of water, such as rivers or along the shoreline of lakes and coastal waters. It’s typically done on the same closed-course race track used in watercress with jet skiing. Much like usual stand-up paddleboarding, you will need a good glide, lightweight board with a longer SUP and a leash for safety.

Intermediate Stand-up Paddleboards for Surfing

A combination of traditional surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, this pastime is popular for those with physical limitations such as hip and shoulder injuries and one that will only be possible once you’ve reached a fairly good SUP standard. Instead of lying on the board and paddling out using their hands to reach the waves, they use the paddle to reach surfable waves, and then, similar to normal surfing, the paddleboarder steers the board to catch these waves.

As you will likely be looking to surf waves up to 1 metre, you need a board that gives you good manoeuvrability. Your best bet is to choose a SUP board with a curved nose that is shorter and thinner than other intermediate offerings. And again, for safe stand-up paddling, don’t forget your leash.

Best Advanced SUP Boards

To be considered an experienced paddler, you will need to have spent considerable time on the water, honing your skills and understanding what type of wet locations you feel confident in. Some like to focus on speed, glide, and manoeuvrability when choosing their next paddleboard, whereas others want a model that ensures efficiency. There are also experienced paddlers who will use their board as an affordable extension of their hobbies.

An experienced paddleboarder with the right board should be confident, whatever the conditions. Although we've already talked about some of our SUP models for touring, racing, and surfing, they can also be used for hobbies such as fishing and yoga. Let’s look at what type of SUP works best for these pastimes.

Although there are boards made specifically for SUP Yoga, they are usually very similar to existing stable SUPs but with just a few additions to the deck pad and accessories. However, when you compare a regular inflatable SUP to the Yoga-specific modifications, you’ll likely find you’re better off with the standard, as it will give you a good, stable yoga experience out on the water and are able to use it for other activities too.

Key Features

SUPs for Yoga

• Inflatable
• Lower level of thickness
• 10-11 foot lengthways
• Plush, flat deck pad to cover up to three-fourths of the surface
• Flat strap handle with a removable handgrip cover

If you have decided to pick up a SUP for fishing, it’s best to go for the inflatable option. They are easy to deflate and transport along with your other fishing accessories and offer more when you’re out on the water. An inflatable paddleboard usually provides a larger deck and increased stability, making casting and moving across the board much easier. They’re also far more compact than kayaks or other boards, with their thickness enhancing buoyancy — a crucial element to fishing. The increased height is also a real plus when it comes to your visibility of the open water. If possible, go for a double layer of PVC fabric to increase the board’s rigidity and protection.
