Choosing a badminton racket is an important part of your game. Whether you are buying a new racket for your new-found love of the sport, or changing the one you have because it’s no longer right for you, we can help.

1. Choosing Your Racket According To Your Playing Frequency

If you are a beginner your racket choice will be completely different to that of a seasoned player as you’ll need and expect different things. Find out which racket is best suited to your playing frequency.

Badminton racket for a beginner

Occasional Player

You need a racket with an isometric head, which will have a larger surface area and will be more forgiving when your strokes are slightly off centre. All in all, it will make your first games easier. Great, eh?

Badminton racket for a regular player

Regular Players

You will need a racket that has power. A racket with a balance point at the head will do this and will make delivery easier.

Badminton racket for an intensive player

Intensive Players

The main priority for intensive players is control of the racket. A racket with a balance point at the handle will meet the expectations of your game giving you excellent reactivity.

2. Three Types Of Racket Composition

Rackets are made from three types of material, and each of them offer a different feeling. Let's take a look at these different racket types.

Steel Rackets

Steel rackets offer good value for money and are very strong . However, they are heavy and not very comfortable to use.

Aluminium Rackets

Aluminium rackets are also very strong. They are lighter than steel rackets but heavier than graphite ones. They are less flexible than graphite rackets.

Graphite Rackets

Graphite rackets are flexible, comfortable and easy to handle. They are also light, but you’ll have to pay more for one.

3. Racket Balance Point

The balance point of the racket can be in three different places:

• Having the balance point at the head will give you power and send the shuttlecock a decent way whilst giving you less control

• Having a neutral balance point is a good compromise for players who haven't yet learnt their strengths and weaknesses as it is the perfect balance between power and control

• Having the balance point at the handle gives you control and speeds up reaction time, but will not give you any extra power
