How to choose a climbing or mountaineering harness

The harness is an essential piece of equipment for any climber. It is what connects you to the rope that holds you in case of a fall; when belaying, you will spend quite a bit of time suspended from it. Discover our advice on which one to choose and ensure your comfort and safety.

Your use

    All-purpose use

Preferably, an adjustable thigh harness should be chosen so that the tightness can be adjusted according to the activity (indoor climbing, rock climbing, mountaineering) and the type of clothing worn. Although it is slightly heavier, it has a greater number of adjustment buckles; it thus guarantees optimal comfort!

    For sport climbing

With a lighter design and for more freedom of movement, a non-adjustable thigh harness is preferable (it will still maintain a minimal fit, thanks to the thigh elastics). Ideal for performance.

    For mountaineering

Choose an extra-light harness with clips on the thighs to attach skis or crampons!

Our comfort advice

It is best to try your harness when suspended if you are going to spend time in the belay station to secure your second.

It should allow you to judge the thickness and density of the padding, the width of the webbing on your back. Estimate the compression points at the thighs and especially at the waist, depending on your body shape, as one model may suit you better than another.

Also take the opportunity to check the correct layout of the gear holders in order to facilitate your movements.

For kids

Two types of harnesses are available for kids:

  • Kids-climbing-harness-simond-decathlon-spider-kid

    Full harness

Recommended for kids younger than 9 (or 30 kg). If your child is not under this bracket but is a beginner and their stature allows it, this model remains the safest. Indeed the centre of gravity for young children is higher than that of adults, so the tie-in point must be higher to avoid the risk of spinning around.

  • Kids-easy-junior-climbing-harness-simond-decathlon

    Classic harness

The classic harness is set aside for small experienced climbers or older kids. The adjustment buckles for the thighs will facilitate your child growing.

The "check&go" design for child safety

Designed by Simond, this system is used in all our kids harnesses. It allows climbing instructors to quickly see if the mutual tie-in control and the belaying system has been done correctly.

So check... & go!
