Best Climbing Spots Around Nottingham

Nottingham is fantastic location for indoor and outdoor climbing.

There are a huge number of climbers in the region and has a number of climbing walls to pick from. With routes and boulder problems to suit the total beginner to the expert competition climber.

Only a 40 minute drive from the city centre will get you out in the amazing Peak District National Park with some of the UK’s most popular and inspiring gritstone trad routes, technical bouldering and challenging limestone sport routes.

All of these walls offer introductory courses and coaching sessions for new climbers. Just take along your rock climbing shoes, chalk and harness (no need for a harness when bouldering).

While you don’t have to be a student to access the wall you do need to have a membership with the centre. Offers top rope, lead and bouldering but is part of the main sports complex offering every other sport you could wish for at the same time.

The 5 Best Crags For Trad Rock Climbing On Gritstone In The Peak District.

We are spoilt for choice with the incredible range of rock climbing in the Peak District. It is highly recommended for beginner climbers to have introductory climbing sessions before attempting rock climbing outdoors.

As with all sport and trad rock climbing we recommend wearing a helmet, even when belaying. There is always a risk of loose rock and the bolting of routes can be variable.

1. Stanage Edge is the most popular climbing locations in the Peak District and UK. Around 1000 routes, mostly vertical and up to 20m high. Stanage Edge

2. Curbar Edge has over 600 climbs to choose from. A haven for steep crack climbing and hard grade routes. Curbar Edge

3. Froggatt Edge boasts around 450 trad routes with some top quality slabs and crack climbs. Froggatt Edge

4. Burbage South has 370 routes most of which are in the higher grade including Parthian Shot, generally considered the best Gritstone climb there is. Burbage South

5. Birchen Edge. With just over 300 routes this edge remains popular due to having a fair few climbs in the lower grades. Birchen Edge.

1. Horseshoe Quarry. 321 routes up to 23m high. The centre of mid and low grade sport climbing in the Peak District. Horseshoe Quarry

2. Chee Dale Upper and Lower. Over 500 great routes generally at the harder end of the grades. Chee Dale

3. Harpur Hill Quarry. 376 routes up to 33m high. A nice selection of lower grade sport routes. Harpur Hill

4. Ravens Tor. Around 270 routes of hard climbing on overhanging, long, crimpy and pumpy routes. Ravens Tor
