Benefits of cardio training

Trying to lose a few kilos? Looking after your health? Just want to feel good or support your wider training plan? Cardio could be for you.

Cardio training is great for your heart—but its benefits go well beyond that. Whether you’re using equipment or not, cardio fitness is a brilliant way to boost both your physical health and mental wellbeing.

Trying to lose a few kilos? Looking after your health? Just want to feel good or support your wider training plan? Cardio could be for you.

What is cardio training?

Cardio fitness is all about getting your heart pumping. In fact, 74% of people who do it say they’re in it for their health or to lose weight. That’s no surprise—by increasing your heart rate, you actually strengthen your heart.

“It’s by pushing our heart that we help it adapt and become more enduring,” explains Stéphane Guéry, expert running coach.

Cardio is for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level. Just pick a pace that works for you. If you’re easing in, cycling is a joint-friendly place to start.
The more regularly you do cardio, the better your heart gets at coping with longer and tougher challenges—like swimming, running or cycling.

What does cardio training do for the body?

Cardio burns energy fast. If you want to tone up, shift some weight or just feel more energised, this type of training is ideal.

You can get started without any fancy equipment— all you really need are some running shoes.

You can also try group classes like dance fitness, circuit training or body attack to really work up a sweat.

It also helps build strength in targeted areas of your body, depending on what you focus on.

Prefer to work out at home? Treadmills, exercise bikes and rowing machines are all great for getting your heart rate up indoors. So if the weather’s against you—or you’re keeping an eye on the kids—you’ve still got options.

There’s no one way to do cardio. Find what fits your style and goals. A coach can help you tailor your training so you get the most out of it.

How cardio can help you relax

Cardio is more than just a workout—it’s a chance to take a break. A moment for yourself. Whether you train solo, as a couple or with friends, it helps clear your head and reset your mood.

Some people go for dance-style sessions like Zumba, which bring a feel-good party vibe to your workout. As Stéphane Guéry puts it: “It’s accessible to everyone and a great way to share a fun moment full of good cheer.”

One simple rule: leave your worries at the door.
