When you’re out in the mountains, you need a jacket that will protect you from the elements without hindering your movements. Mountain coats and jackets have been specifically designed for hiking and climbing. These types of coats are generally waterproof and breathable, making them ideal for any type of weather condition.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD MOUNTAIN COAT?

There are many different styles of mountain coats, including fleece, down, and synthetic materials. And they're much warmer and offer more protection compared to your average winter coat. Our range of mountain coats have an athletic, pre-shaped cut which means that they’re not baggy and flapping around in the wind, but it also means that the jackets are built to move how you move. This is to make sure your jacket doesn’t hold you back as you trek over rugged terrain.

Mountain jackets should also be relatively lightweight and packable. They may well spend a lot of time stuffed into your rucksack, but the jacket also needs to perform when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

IS A DOWN JACKET BETTER THAN SYNTHETIC?

Down jackets are a great choice for those who want to stay warm while out in cold conditions. Down is made from goose feathers which makes them hypoallergenic, and is naturally insulating, meaning it keeps you warm without adding weight to your pack. Down jackets are also compressible, making them perfect for travel. However down jackets do not handle rain well and will lose their insulating properties when wet.

Synthetic jackets are made from man-made fibres that provide insulation. Synthetic jackets are generally less expensive, but they are far bulkier than down jackets. Though they do perform better in the rain.

At Decathlon, you’ll find a variety of waterproof jackets and soft shell jackets designed specifically for mountain adventures. You'll also find winter walking boots, thermal clothing, and hiking equipment and accessories, everything you need in one place.
