When the temperature drops, an insulated jacket will protect you from the cold. But with different types of insulation available, how do you know which is best for you?

The most common types of insulation used in thermal jackets are down and synthetic, and each has its own pros and cons. Then you also have a hybrid design, which uses both down and synthetic insulation with the intention of giving you the best of both worlds.

MEN'S INSULATED JACKETS

When looking for men's insulated jackets, down is the best insulation that nature can provide. It usually comes from duck and geese feathers, which give the most warmth with the least amount of bulk.

The warmth of a down jacket is determined by its fill power which ranges from 500 to 900, and the higher the number, the warmer the jacket. A lower-fill jacket will provide enough warmth for general wear in the winter, whereas a 900-fill power jacket is suited to alpine conditions, though it will command a much higher price.

One drawback of a down jacket is that it can't be worn in the rain as it will lose all its warmth, and it will damage the down fibres, shortening the life of the jacket. But we do have a wide range of men’s waterproof jacketsavailable, allowing you to face extreme weather conditions. And alsowaterproof gloves for added protection.

INSULATED WATERPROOF JACKET

If you want a thermal jacket that you can wear in the rain, then synthetic insulation may be the way to go. This is the most common type of insulation used in thermal jackets. It can offer similar warmth to down, and the hydrophobic fabric will only hold 1% of its weight in water, letting the jacket dry fast and retain its warmth. However, synthetic insulation is far heavier and bulkier compared to natural down.

When it's cold, base layersform an important part of the outdoor layering system. The layer you wear next to your skin should be lightweight and breathable. Why not top it up with awarm fleece or jumperfor ultimate warmth and comfort?
