Not Bad Value for the Money

Components wear out quickly

used for 3 to 6 months I bought one of these as a winter bike. Although I have ridden it through rain and muddy roads, I have always cleaned it after each ride. I enjoy riding it. However, it there are problems with the durability of the components. The freewheel failed after about 6 weeks. Decathlon replaced the whole wheel without any problem. However, after about three months and 1500 miles the cassette and chain were worn out. I have replaced these with better components, which should last longer!

I would normally expect cassette and chain to last at least twice as long. So decent bike for the price, but drive train could be better specced.

used for 2 to 8 weeks This is an amazing bike if your looking to get into road racing. Great product for the price. You can take the bile back as many time in the first 3 momths for a service and check. I would highly recommend the triban 500 SE to anyone. Amazing product.

After looking around for the best bike to buy on an entry level budget all reviews pointed towards the Triban 500SE. I got mine on the cycle so I made as great saving on the already low price. I have been cycling to work often taking a 15 mile route on a rather clunky old mountain bike. Needless to say the triban was a revelation and shaved 15 minutes of my commute time. The breaks are amazing (the breaks on my old mountain bike didn't work though!). Usually on my ride to work I get overtaken by a load of his on flashy carbon bikes but I am now able to match their speed on the Triban. Trouble is I've now got the bug and already wondering how fast I can go on a fully carbon bike! Excellent bike!!!!

The fabulous Triban 500 SE

used for 2 to 8 weeks This is my second Triban. I use it everyday for work so I've added a pannier rack. My routes take me onto towpaths, through parks and onto rough roads so I've changed the tyres to Durano Plus Etape and the tubes to Slime.

The bike is light - not as light as thoroughbred road bikes but light enough to breeze along and keep pace. The gearing is well sorted with swift and accurate changes and excellent ratios and, for big guys like me the triple chainset makes light work of hills. The brakes are excellent and fill one with confidence. When I get around to it I'll put my Brooks B17 saddle on but the factory saddle is just fine even on extended rides.

I have the 63cm frame to suit my height and it is stiff and really well made and the riding position was perfect right out of the box.

I cycle between 3,000 and 4,000 miles each year, throughout the year so I've added SKS Raceblades for the winter. Maybe the only niggle is being unable to fit full guards between the brake calipers and the Durano tyres but the Duranos are a few millimeters taller than the factory Hutchinsons. Since upgrading the tyres I've learned of the Tannus solid tyres (no punctures, ever) so I may well upgrade again later.

I have a Shimano Sora groupset from a Dawes which was written off by and idiot driver. The groupset was less than three months old when that bike was ruined so, In time I'll upgrade the Triban but, again, there is no hurry since the factory components are excellent.

If you are thinking of buying a road bike and your budget is up to £1,000 then I would thoroughly recommend the Triban 500 SE because, for my money (and probably for yours) you will struggle to do better unless you really want to lose a kilo or so off the mass and don't mind losing the added flexibility offered by the Triban.

Well made

Little long

used for 2 to 8 weeks For the money I am pretty sure this can't be beat. Absolutely everything works as it should. Sure it doesn't have the cleanest gearchange or the strongest brakes but you aren't paying for them. Something that could be better is the bike is long, too long for me but a shorter stem sorted that out. Although it was a sporty stance it was just too stretched out. Other than that the bike is great.
If you are looking for a good priced runabout or even a winter bike then this is the one for you.
