A torch is a useful accessory to have. Sure, you can use the torch on your phone, but it only really works to illuminate objects a couple of metres away. For further than this, you can't beat a good hiking torch. Plus, they are a lot more robust than a phone.

Whether you're going camping, walking the dog, or want to keep a torch in the car for emergencies, there are lots of torches available, and they can be pretty inexpensive too. But aside from value, there are several factors to consider when buying a torch.

FEATURES OF A WALKING TORCH

A walking or hiking torch is a very handy piece of equipment to carry in your rucksack. But not all travel torches are created equal.

Lumens: This is the amount of visible light produced by a torch or lamp. But how many lumens is best? It actually depends on what you need it for. Torches of 500 lumens and above are fantastic for outdoors and often feature a focused beam to see long distances. But you don't need anything this powerful if you just want a torch to check under a car bonnet.

IP rating: An IP (ingress protection) rating determines how well protected an electrical device is from dust and water. For a torch you plan to use outdoors, a rating of IPX4 is a minimum starting point. IPX4 will cope with drizzle and light moisture. For the best protection, IP67 or IP68 is needed.

Rechargeable: A torch with a rechargeable battery is more convenient for you and better for the environment as you don't need to keep replacing batteries. Choose a torch that you can plug in and charge at home, or a dynamo torch, which can be charged by turning the handle.

DOG WALKING TORCH

It's important that you can see where you're going when walking your dog at night, so a dog walking torch will keep you both safe, and it will make picking up doggie poop a whole lot easier. The best torch for dog walking is hands-free, so you can hold the lead and still have a spare hand for when you might need it, so a headlamp is a great option. If you're looking for more accessories for your dog, we also have dog collars, leads, and harnesses.
