Sailing Jacket

Your sailing jacket & smocks for comfortable sailing

Our Tribord designers have come up with a whole range of products for you to use when sailing. Like the jacket 900, an iconic sailing product. Its qualities are undeniable: windproof, waterproof, breathable. The sailing jacket accompanies occasional or passionate sailors in all weathers. It complements the technical underlayers and stops the attacks of the wind or water during sea outings.

The advantages of the windbreaker for sailing

Every experienced sailor has a windbreaker jacket such as a windbreaker or sailing jacket, which is used for each of his escapades at sea. This garment is indeed full of assets for sportsmen or boating enthusiasts exposed to varied and sometimes intense weather conditions. The protection offered by these jackets covers not only the upper body, but also the head thanks to the tight-fitting hoods that prevent wind and rain from seeping into the neck. On the other hand, by tightening the elastic sleeves, the protection in the arms is maximum and this despite the compulsory movements to navigate safely.

The jacket and the sailing jacket benefit from the same waterproof properties. The real difference will be in the structure of the product. Indeed, the jacket does not have a front zip and incorporates finer adjustments:

  • Adjustments at the collar, for optimal neck protection
  • Adjustments at the waist and cuffs to avoid water infiltration

The jacket will be used in much more sporty conditions, particularly during regattas or in light sailing on supports such as dinghies or catamarans. Its lightness and waterproofing guarantee that all crew members, even on forward stations (Number 1 or Number 2) that are much more exposed to waves and spray, will stay dry. Don't forget to complete your equipment with a salopette and sailing boots.

Technical characteristics of the Tribord raincoats

The range of raincoats developed by Decathlon is aimed at both occasional users who sail two or three times a year and experienced sailors who put in hours of coastal or offshore sailing. Thus, several types of products exist to suit everyone's needs. The first price windbreakers, light and versatile, are aimed at men who want to acquire a quality product that can be used on a daily basis. Waterproof in light rain and protective in light winds, they dry quickly while benefiting from good resistance to salt water. The more technical jackets and smocks offer significant protection in harsh weather conditions, such as storms with high rainfall and strong winds. The breathable 3-layer laminate fabric, which is effective against all types of weather, allows the skin to breathe and prevents the unpleasant accumulation of perspiration. There are more pockets on this type of product, some dedicated to hand warming and others to securing precious items. The double adjustable sleeve is a plus for a perfect protection on all morphologies.

How to dress for a sea outing?

To dress well, a principle is used in various outdoor sports including sailing, it consists in stacking 3 layers of clothing in a performing way to answer the weather conditions of your sea outings. The first layer should guarantee comfort and breathability. This technical layer should not be neglected, it is in direct contact with the skin and will prevent you from catching cold. Some first layers, like our range of merino underwear, can also ensure the double function of breathability and warmth thanks to the presence of wool in the product. As you have understood the second layer is an insulation layer. The purpose of this intermediate layer is to protect you from the cold. Discover all our layer 2 products like our fleece jackets or softshell.

Finally, the last layer corresponds to the protective layer. It is the first bulwark against external attacks from wind, rain, waves. This outer layer must therefore be waterproof, windproofbut alsobreathable to evacuate sweat and avoid the sauna effect. Our sailing jackets and vests respect these properties. Moreover, they are cut wide enough to be able to cover you underneath in cold weather and respect the 3-layer concept.

The essential accessories for starting out on a boat

Whatever your favourite type of boat, a first outing on the sea has to be prepared for and requires a few accessories in order to deal with any eventuality. On the clothing side, as mentioned above, it is essential to choose technical clothing suitable for sailing. A combination of breathable, insulating and waterproof layers will ensure comfortable progress in the sport. The sailing jacket will follow you from the harbour to the open sea, and can even be worn in the city in windy and rainy conditions. If the weather changes during your outing, it will be a great comfort. For your safety, don't forget to check the compulsory equipment on your boat. Also remember to bring a first aid kit, a map or GPS, a tidal calendar and weather report, a torch, and some water and food rations in a form that can be stored. The sun's rays are more aggressive in the open sea because of the reverberation. So remember to take your sunglasses and a good sunscreen and UV protective clothing if you want to relax during a break. Finally, your phone and wallet will always come in handy if you land in a different place from where you started. Keep them in a waterproof pouch or closed floating canister.

Maintaining the water repellency of a sailing jacket

The main advantage of a sailing jacket is its water repellency. Able to let drops of water slide off without soaking in, it retains its qualities better if you follow these tips. First, empty your jacket's pockets well and close all zips before cleaning it. This will prevent the coating from being damaged by a sharp object. Next, turn the jacket inside out to minimise friction with the drum and run a special synthetic washing programme at a maximum of 40C. Traditional washing powder is very suitable, provided that you do not add fabric softener, which would damage the fibres. Drying is best done flat, on a towel or dryer. To reactivate the water-repellency of the sailing jacket, you can tumble dry it for about ten minutes. Another possibility is to use a spray that revives the water-repellent effect of your garment, to be passed over the entire area of the jacket.
